What 12 Days at a Master Artisan’s Atelier Taught Me.

Dear Reader,

Last week, I completed an intensive 12-day training at the atelier of Béatrice "Bea" Amblard, a Hermès-trained master artisan with more than 40 years of experience in authentic French craftsmanship.

As a practicing leather artisan, I must say, it was a deeply humbling experience.

Every cut, every stitch and every detail was being handled with extraordinary precision and care. It reminded me that mastery is built quietly, through patience, repetition and respect for every step of the process.

Throughout the years, I have learned to use modern and efficient methods, such as digital pattern making. But there was something beautifully grounding about returning to the foundations, creating a pattern from scratch with nothing more than a pencil, a ruler, and a piece of paper.

Most of the techniques and insights that Bea shared I didn't find before in any book or online tutorial. Through continuous repetition of certain movements, creating seemingly small projects, I built as she calls it 'muscle memory' and at the end of 12 days new habits were formed in the most natural manner.

At the atelier, I was also privileged to work alongside other artisans who share the same deep love for leather craftsmanship. There was something very special about learning together, sharing stories, encouraging one another and even forming new friendships.

The investment of time and resources was definitely worth it.

This experience reminded me that, in an age when shortcuts, automation, and AI-generated content are often celebrated in the name of efficiency, speed can sometimes come at the expense of quality, precision, excellence, and soul.

There is something irreplaceable about an object made by human hands. When a skilled artisan touches and transforms leather (or any raw material) with patience, care, and intention, it becomes more than just a product. It becomes a work of art, that reflects the individuality of the person it is created for.

That is the part of craftsmanship I treasure most: the human connection woven into every piece.

I returned home with renewed enthusiasm and many lessons to put into practice as I create your handbags, wallets, and other leather goods. You may not see every new technique or every refined movement, but you will experience them in the quality, beauty, and care of the finished piece.

I will continue learning, refining, and pursuing mastery in my craft, because what I create for you deserves nothing less.

May your week be filled with joy in what you do, a desire to never stop learning and the courage to pursue mastery through the talents entrusted to you, to bring beauty and value into the lives of others.

With love,

Rozanne
