To most of us from Curaçao, it still feels surreal that our island participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and did so as the smallest nation ever to qualify, earning a place in the Guinness World Records.
Almost overnight, Curaçao stepped onto the world stage. A name that was often unknown or mispronounced suddenly became a headline across international media and social platforms for weeks.
Perhaps even more remarkable was what happened at home. A multicultural community united around a common goal in a way many of us had never witnessed before.
I am convinced that the Blue Wave will leave a lasting social and economic impact on our island. But beyond that, I believe it also taught us valuable personal lessons that should not be forgotten.
Here are my seven biggest takeaways:
1. It only takes one person to believe.
Many people considered the idea of Curaçao reaching the World Cup unrealistic. Some even mocked the dream until the very last moment. Yet one person believed. And kept believing. Then others joined. Eventually an entire nation followed. Never underestimate the power of one person refusing to let go of a vision.
2. Your greatest obstacle may become your greatest breakthrough.
The match many feared most was against Germany. Yet it was in that game that Curaçao scored. The obstacle you fear the most may be the very place where you discover what you are capable of.
3. Creativity follows courage.
As soon as qualification was secured, entrepreneurs, artists, chefs, and creators across the island began producing Blue Wave-inspired products, experiences, and celebrations. Creativity often doesn’t appear before the first step. It appears because of it.
4. Don’t be afraid to stand for what you believe.
Throughout the tournament, players openly demonstrated their faith in both victory and defeat. People may not always agree with your beliefs, but they respect authenticity. There is power in consistently living what you profess.
5. You are never too old to pursue a dream.
At 78 years old, Dick Advocaat became the oldest coach in World Cup history. His presence reminded us that purpose has no expiration date.
6. Turn your disadvantages into opportunities.
Realistically, few expected Curaçao to win the World Cup. Yet what many saw as our weakness became our greatest strength. The world rallied behind the underdog. Our story captured hearts far beyond football. Sometimes the very thing that appears to hold us back becomes the reason we stand out.
7. Character matters more than the scoreboard.
Curaçao did not win a match, yet we earned something equally valuable: respect. The sportsmanship displayed by the players, the prayers shared with opposing teams after matches, and the unwavering support from fans even after elimination revealed something deeper than competition. We showed that integrity, humility, faith, and character matter long after the final whistle blows.
The Blue Wave may eventually fade from the headlines, but its lessons do not have to.May we carry them into our businesses, our families, our communities, and the dreams we have yet to pursue.
Because sometimes the greatest victory is not what we achieve, but what we become in the process.
